| Summary, etc | As digital media grows increasingly pervasive, cultural geographers continue to engage with new mechanisms for conducting and sharing their research. This article discusses a collaborative ethnography project that I conducted on artisan chicken in Miyazaki prefecture, Japan, and shared as a playlist of six YouTube videos. Although inexperienced with creating film, I found that making these collaborative videos created a mechanism for sharing and recognizing collaborators’ efforts in raising and retailing artisan chicken. To reduce the chance of adverse outcomes, I clarified the project’s goals, sought input from participants at multiple stages, curated the video content, and scrutinized the best website and settings for sharing the project. Even with these precautions, however, the project created tension between my role as a researcher and video blog curator. In conclusion, I reflect on the benefits, tensions, and pitfalls of this project. Despite its challenges, I encourage other scholars to reflexively pursue opportunities presented by digital media. |
